Children's book to raise funds for scoliosis research
Spa owner motivated by daughter's condition

Bookie and the Scoliosis Diagnosis

By Charelle Evelyn

Eight years ago Nina Saab had never heard of scoliosis. But when her then 12-year-old daughter, Alexa, was diagnosed with the spine-curving condition, her life changed in a way she never saw coming.

Nina Saab, the co-owner of SAAB Salon Spa on Bank Street, said she felt a great deal of anger and denial resulting from her daughter's relatively late diagnosis of idiopathic scoliosis.

The famous adage goes that a picture is worth a 1,000 words. But for CanHave, a Canadian registered charitable NGO, Gavin Murphy’s pictures are worth $1,255.86. This is the sum raised from the Ottawa photographer’s instant Portaits exhibition and donated to the Ottawa-based charity that supports AIDS orphans in Uganda.

A different day at the SPA

It was a red carpet evening Thursday as Saab Salon Spa Hosted its 6th annual charity cocktail party in support of scoliosis research at CHEO. The bank Street Business was abuzz with partygoers bidding, on prizes with help from lawyer Lawrence Greenspon, who auctioned off artwork, weekend getaways and autographed Sens jerseys.

This year, the party also celebrated the newly recognized Scoliosis Awareness Day in Ottawa as proclaimed by Mayor Larry O’Brien.

RAISING FUNDS TO CURE SCOLIOSIS

It's the Right Thing to Do

The beauty business is booming. We've grown accustomed to the multitude of services offered by spas and salons. Yet how often do we encounter a spa salon that gives back to the community and tries to make a difference? Enter SAAB.

I sat recently with Nina Saab, co-owner, along with her husband Frank, of SAAB Salon Spa. Instead of talking about their newest promotion or products, Nina chose to speak of a matter that's dear to her heart: scoliosis, a condition that leads to a pronounced and painful curvature of the spine.

SAAB is an Aveda Lifestyle Spa and Salon. To be affiliated with the socially-conscious and environmental-friendly Aveda, a spa must meet certain conditions and give back to the community. Nina saw this as a perfect opportunity to merge a cause she believes with the adopted brand motto.

The Saab for Scoliosis party keeps getting bigger and better with a huge crowd showing up at the Centretown salon and spa Wednesday to help raise $20,000.

Among the fun features of this fundraiser, now in its fourth year, are the spiffy looking doorman, a crew of college students posing as paparazzi and some pampering from salon staff.

Spa Daze

When papering is on my to do list, I kiss the pedicured feet of the spa goddesses for bringing Janis Fry Delahunt of Beautiful You Aesthetics to me. She and her toy army of O.P.I. nail polishes will make house and office calls when I need and emergency Mani/pedi. And thank heaven (and my father) for my naturally blonde locks that that make hair care so seemingly effortless.

Frank Saab is the master at SAAB Salon Spa, an Aveda Concept Salon and Spa, where a black-clad assembly of apprentices ( yes he is the stylist version of Donald Trump) are ready, willing and able to attend to my every need. A 10 minutes scalp massage is just the icing on the cake.
